A Magistrate visits Year 6

On Tuesday 29th September Year 6 enjoyed a really interesting visit from Elaine Terry, a magistrate in Chelmsford. She explained how the court worked, what types of crimes would be heard there and the variety of penalties that could be incurred. The children took part in very lively debates discussing the relative severity of a variety of crimes and the appropriate punishments. They also considered the contexts of crimes and reasons that might cause people to offend. They discussed what criminal responsibility from the age of 10 means in real terms and what situations they might find themselves in as they grow up where making the right choices would be imperative.
