Years 3 and 4 visit Duxford
Years 3 and 4 spent a wonderful (if damp!) day at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, learning about life for evacuees during World War Two and considering the wartime experience from different perspectives. In the World War Two classroom, the children were shocked to find that teachers used canes for poor work and misbehaviour and that those that wrote with their left hand would have their hand tied behind their back to teach them to use their right (as was considered proper!). We found it very tricky – and messy – to write with the ink and fountain pens provided but we impressed the teacher with our times tables knowledge and our behaviour. We also examined artefacts and images to find out about the lives of a range of people during the war – the children loved trying on some of the RAF clothing, packing essentials for a soldier and playing with games and toys of the period. Overall, we agreed that we were happy to be living in 2016 rather than wartime Britain, even though a good day was had by all.
