Spring Term Newsletter – 2017
Happy New Year!
Welcome back. I hope you have had a good Christmas break. Mrs Sullivan, Mrs Martin and I would like to thank you for all the lovely Christmas gifts we received at the end of last term
Please find below a brief outline of what we will be covering this term.
English: This term we are looking at classic fiction, specifically ‘The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame’ this will include exploring and understanding the charm and challenge of a classic novel, narrative writing and play scripts. Non-fiction work will include reports and journalistic writing and information texts.
Spelling, grammar, punctuation, handwriting, guided reading, reading comprehension, vocabulary expansion and improving self-editing skills are ongoing.
Maths: Improving mental calculations-including times tables. Comparing and ordering fractions, understanding and identifying equivalent fractions. Recognising improper fractions and mixed numbers. Adding and subtracting fractions with the same and differing denominators. Multiplying proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers. Reading and writing decimals as fractions. Recognising and using thousandths and relating them to tenths, hundredths and decimal equivalents. Rounding decimals to the nearest whole number and 1 d.p. Reading writing and comparing numbers up to 3d.p. Understanding percentages as part of 100, writing percentages as fractions with a denominator of 100 and as a decimal.
Science: We will be finishing our work on forces before moving on to properties and changes of materials.
Topic (Geography/History): Coasts and Rivers. This includes, costal resorts around the UK, erosion and its impact, the water cycle, deposition and longshore drift, identifying rivers on a map particularly those of the British Isles, and the course of a river.
Art Design and Technology: We will be studying the work of artists Monet and David Hockney, specifically their water themed works.
French: La famille and chez moi!
Computing: This term we will be covering word processing.
P.E: This half term Mr Dyce will be teaching tag rugby and indoor athletics. After the half term break he will be teaching hockey we will also continue with Netball. Children will need full PE kits available in school, including a change of socks. Tracksuits are advisable in the colder weather. A plastic bag kept inside the PE bag for muddy trainers is helpful.
Music: This term we will be covering woodwind and brass.
RE: Hindu and Christian creation stories followed by Hindu rituals of death and Easter.
PHSE: Keeping safe and Medicine and drugs
Other information:
P.E. – This will be taught on Tuesdays and Fridays, before half term and Mondays and Tuesdays after half term. Please ensure all kit is in school for both days. Make sure all kit and uniform is labelled so that missing items can be easily reunited.
Reading- Please encourage children to read daily and take responsibility for their reading journals. This includes bringing it to school every day, updating it when they start and finish a book and completing their reading challenges to an acceptable standard.

Class 5 Newsletter Autumn 2016
Welcome back, I hope you have had a good summer. I’d like to take the opportunity to introduce myself, my name is Miss Turner and I am new to the school this year, I shall be teaching class 5.
Please find below a brief outline of what we will be covering this term.
Curriculum
English: We will be looking at a variety of narrative structures and techniques including myths and legends. Non-fiction work will include autobiographies and discussion writing.
Spelling, grammar, punctuation, handwriting, guided reading, reading comprehension, vocabulary expansion and improving self-editing skills are ongoing.
Maths: Improving mental calculations, using knowledge of place value, to add and subtract using the column method, rounding including decimals, and understanding of Roman numerals. Learning and improving times table knowledge.
Science: Earth and Space and forces.
Topic (History and Geography): Ancient Greece.
Art, Design and Technology: Cubism. This will include studies of artists such as Picasso.
French: les vetements and La nourriture.
Computing: We will be looking at programming.
P.E: This Mr Dyce will be teaching football and cross country. We will also be covering Netball. Children will need full PE kits available in school, including a change of socks. Tracksuits are advisable in the colder weather. A plastic bag kept inside the PE bag for muddy trainers is helpful.
Music: This term we will be covering woodwind and brass and medieval music in order to understand the history of music.
RE: Stories from the New Testament followed by Diwali and Christmas.
PHSE: Rules and responsibilities and friendships.
Other information:
P.E.- This will be taught on Tuesdays and Fridays, before half term and Mondays and Tuesdays after half term. Please ensure all kit is in school for both days and long hair is tied up. Make sure all kit and uniform is labelled so that missing items can be easily reunited.
Reading- Children have been given a new reading journal for the year in which they record the book they are reading, when they start and finish their books and, upon completing their books, carry out one of the reading challenges which can be found on the inside front cover of their journals. Children are expected to read for a minimum of ten minutes a day.
Homework– Homework will be set every Friday and will be due in on the following Wednesday. Activities will be varying in subject from week to week. If homework is not completed by Wednesday it will be completed at break or lunchtime.
Pencil cases- Children are welcome to bring in their own pencil cases and are responsible for looking after the contents of their own pencil case. Please ensure they are of an appropriate size that can fit into their trays.
Trips- On Thursday the 3rd November Years 5 and 6 will be undertaking a visit to the British Museum. If any parents are available to accompany us on this trip as a helper for the day please send a note in with your child.
