Class 4 Newsletter Summer Term
Welcome back!
We hope you have had a fantastic Easter break. We are looking forward to the Summer Term, where we hope there will be more opportunities for outside Learning.
Outlined below are the curriculum areas to be covered, as well as ways you can help to support your child’s learning in Year 4.
English
Listening to your child read continues to be very important, as does discussing their understanding of the texts they are reading. There will be daily classroom time for reading, handwriting, grammar and spelling activities. Children must bring their reading records and books to class every day.
We will be visiting the library as often as possible, where children will be allowed to borrow a book of their choice. We have been learning about how to use a library.
Text types focus: Persuasive writing, List poems and Kennings, Biography, Non-chronological Report Writing.
We will also be continuing with our weekly spellings and regular grammar lessons.
Maths
We continue to focus on learning all the X tables up to 12. We have opportunities in class to practise but extra consolidation time at home would be extremely beneficial. The statutory X Table check will begin from Monday 3rd June.
We will also be learning about Time, Money, Shape and Position and Direction.
We continue with regular mental maths practise.
Science
We will be continuing with our work on Habitats; forest school sessions will be arranged to compliment this topic.
We will then be learning about Sound.
RE
We will be learning about key humanitarian figures: Martin Luther King and Mother Theresa. We will be thinking about how their ideas have changed the thinking of others.
PSHE
Areas covered: Keeping safe in the home, Sun safety, Drugs and alcohol, healthy sleep and Medway sex Education.
PE
Children will be having two PE sessions weekly on a Tuesday (With Mr Snelling) and Wednesday (with Miss Crosby). We will be focusing on athletics and rounders. Please make sure your children have their kits in school for the whole week (including trainers) as there are sometimes opportunities for extra PE lessons.
History and Geography
In History lessons children will be learning about events leading up to and during World War II and will develop an understanding of key moments including ‘The Blitz’. They will write a letter home from the point of view of an evacuee.
Later in the term children will be learning about ‘Rainforests’ and the positive and negative impact of deforestation.
ART/DT
In DT children will be exploring different types of pastry, then designing and making a new puff-pastry tart.
In Art we will be taking inspiration from nature and the children will sketch, design and produce a 3D clay tile.
Computing
Children will be researching examples of repeating patterns in our environment and Islamic art and create simple tessellations in Inscape. Then children will create their own design inspired by the art of Bridget Riley.
French
Our topic is ‘Les Vacances’ and children will be practising familiar vocabulary and phrases as well as learning to read and repeat simple sentences. We will learn to ask and answer questions about travel and holiday activities in French whilst continuing to improve our pronunciation.
Music
Children will continue to listen and appraise pieces of music from a range of genres and engage in different musical activities including learning to play the Glockenspiel on Tuesday afternoons.
Homework
Along with listening to your child read, please continue to support the children in practising and learning their spellings. Six sets of spellings will be issued for the half term and tests will take place every Friday; please assist them with look, cover, write, check activities to consolidate their learning. Maths, English, Science or Topic homework will continue to be set on Fridays for return the following Wednesday. Tasks are set in order to support and consolidate the learning taking place in class. Please support your child to ensure that they understand what has been asked of them and to make sure that their work is clearly and neatly completed but allow them to complete the work as independently as possible. If there is ever any confusion, or your child is having trouble with the homework, please let us know (preferably before Wednesday) so we are able to help them.
If you have any questions or concerns at any time, please email us via the office and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
Kind Regards,
Ms Crosby and Mrs Webb
