Year 5 River Study at Daws Hall
Year 5 had a great day on their geography field trip at Daws Hall on the River Stour. They practised their map-reading skills for an orienteering activity, identified river features studied in class and took samples of water from both the main river and its tributary, the Losh House Brooke, to test water quality. We were disappointed to hear of the water quality of most of Essex’s rivers, but we did notice that the water in the Brooke was cleaner – mostly because it is nearer its source and has travelled less distance to acquire pollutants. We finished the day with some pond dipping and were amazed to discover the number of creatures living in our fresh water ponds. The children were exhausted but happy at the end of a long and busy day.
